The Erasmus bridge, at walking distance from Hotel New York, was built in 1996 to serve as the second connection (in addition to Willemsbrug bridge) between Rotterdam’s city centre and the ‘Kop van Zuid’ area. The bridge is a so-called ‘guyed bridge’ and was designed by architect Ben van Berkel. With its length of 802 metres, height of 139 metres and weight of 6800 tonnes this bridge has become the ultimate symbol for Rotterdam. The inhabitants of Rotterdam prefer to call it ‘the Swan’ and are very proud of this bridge, which forms the centre of numerous events, such as the famous Rotterdam Marathon, the World Port Days, the Red Bull Air Race and the national New Year’s Eve fireworks.
